Elon Musk: technoking and, soon, a burger king?
Tesla has filed applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to use three versions of its logo in the food industry.
The applications cite restaurant services, pop-up restaurant services, self-service restaurant services and take-out restaurant services as possible uses, Bloomberg reported last week.
The filings appear to be connected with an idea that Musk, the CEO and self-appointed “technoking” of Tesla, has tossed out to his Twitter followers several times in recent years. “Major new Supercharger station coming to Santa Monica soon! Hoping to have 50’s diner & 100 best movie clips playing too,” he wrote in April.
In 2018, the electric vehicle maker’s chief technology officer, J.B. Straubel, told attendees at a restaurant convention that Tesla had been working on a concept for food service and convenience stores at its charging stations.
But those already in the food business say Musk likely has a long way to go before he could make his vision a reality.
“For as futuristic and fast as the Tesla is, the exact opposite could be said for the [restaurant] process in Santa Monica,” Hans Röckenwagner, chef and CEO of Röckenwagner Bakery Group, told Bloomberg. “See you in a year — if you’re lucky — Elon.”
